2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Review: Plug-in Makes Perfect

I was excited to review the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Not something I thought I’d be writing as a sports car enthusiast, but the new generation is incredible. The trim I received was the Nightshade Edition, which is basically the mid-trim XSE with black out parts.

Starting on the outside, the Prius had the Nightshade exclusive Karashi yellow color. If you’re wanting to add more flash to the already attention grabbing design, this is definitely the color to get. With this being the Nightshade Edition, you’ll get blacked out front bumper trim, front and rear badges, wheels, door handles, and shark fin antenna. I personally like the added black but wished it was more of a package since you won’t have all the options that the higher Premium offers, like the solar charging roof, digital rearview mirror, and 360 degree camera system.

When you get inside, the Nightshade items include things like the black door sills and the carbon-fiber detail on dashboard. The interior will also be in black SofTex with grey stitching.

Under the hood, the 2.0L plug-in hybrid, delivered 200 horsepower. That’s an increase of 24 horsepower over the standard hybrid, but will also be an additional 400 lbs heavier. Not to worry, you wont really feel the added weight as it appears to have been placed at a lower and centered position. Where the plug-in excels, is the fact that you are able to force the Prius to be EV only and not turn on the internal combustion engine. You’ll have 39 miles when you charge it and will unfortunately take about 4 hours, due to the onboard charging only allowing me to go to 3.7kWH. I wish the Prius had the capacity to charge at my level 2 charger’s maximum of 9kWH, which would’ve made the charge significantly faster.

Is the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid the best Prius? I can easily say yes. It gives the flexibility of using only full EV mode and not using a single drop of fuel. If you decide to be lazy and not charge it, the hybrid option is still there and is really efficient.
