2026 Volkswagen Golf R Review: R is for Really Really Good
The 2026 Volkswagen Golf R is taking the hot hatch segment to a scorching level. I was already in love with the standard Golf GTi and wondered if you even needed to go to the R level. After having it for a week, the answer was basically yes, if you can afford it.
Starting on the outside, the Graphite Gray color had a sparkle that made the color stand out but in a subtle way. I would like to start to see Volkswagen integrate special colors like the Ginster Yellow, Montana Green, Tornado Red, or even a new Harlequin Edition. The R front bumper design differs from the GTi by having a more squared off shape, and the deletion of the honeycomb shaped fog lights, in favor for more cooling. The big 19” wheels were needed to be able to run the massive 14” brakes with the blue painted calipers. I would’ve liked to see the side skirts in a black color to match the front lower bumper, and to add an accent to the side profile.
Getting in, the R stitched seats meant business. They were made to hold you in place in a comfortable way, should you decide to go on the track or simply a spirited drive. The venting did suffer against our very hot Texas summer days. Besides the seats, the sporty steering wheel was my favorite component in the Golf R, with its grippy perforated leather wrap. Blasting my music via the wireless Apple CarPlay, delivered my driving playlist via the incredibly sounding Harman Kardon system with subwoofer included.
Under the hood, the 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, delivered 328 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That power was handled and distributed by the 7-speed DSG automatic, R-Performance 4MOTION all-wheel drive w/Torque Vectoring, and the XDS Cross Differential System. Put that all together and you have constant power being delivered at the correct wheel. Getting the Golf R to rotate in the corner was no problem, with a system that continued to provide feedback and confidence to add more and more throttle in the corners. I will say that the ride quality of the Golf R will be a little on the sports car-like, even when I set the adjustable damper system to the softest setting. Some of that is due to the large wheels with low-profile tires.
Overall, after driving the 2026 Volkswagen Golf R, I’ve come to realize that I was wrong in thinking that the GTi was more than enough. So if you have the Golf R money, don’t hesitate to get it because its the greatness of the GTi taken to a whole other level.
